THE BRAINY BUNCH
As controversial as some want to make the following book, because of the ages the children started college, it doesn't mean you have to mimic everything they did.
To give you a glimpse into the possibilities of this book, while I was reading it, I had a revelation and connection between 2 books, that I would not have realized if I hadn't read them both.
If you know the IEW program, it advocates reading and rewriting a story. Starting with outlining... Its a wonderful program for reluctant, hesitant, and beginning writers as well as beneficial for seasoned writers. The wonderful truth of this program is that it can be used to LEARN just about any subject and RETAIN it. Science, history, etc.
Well, I made this connection when reading the IEW and The Brainy Bunch books... They both mention Benjamin Franklin.
Here's a fast read about Benjamin Franklin, and why Benjamin Franklin connected the two together.

This is one glimpse into the book below, and a small glimpse into The Brainy Bunch book and IEW.
I connected the two, as they both wrote the exact same thing about Benjamin Franklin!!!
A MEMORABLE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
- Have a special breakfast.
- First day photos!!!
- Check their height.
- Decorate binders.
- Go on a "treasure hunt" to find each curriculum book.
- Make a surprise theme for the day. (Detective, Mad Scientist, etc.)
- Make a really special lunch with cutout sandwiches and fruit shapes.
- If you haven't already, introduce the curriculum.
- Create a special treat for at the end of the day. i.e. Movie and popcorn.
Here's a great link to a long list of ideas...
WILDLIFE HABITAT
Have your children, young or old, certify your backyard into a wildlife habitat!!! This shows responsibility, educates about local wildlife, shows commitment, creates a character of sharing and caring, and so many other wonderful attributes!!!
Anyone can creae a welcoming haven for local wildlife. Turning your yard, balcony container garden, schoolyard, work landscape, or roadside greenspace into a Certified Wildlife Habitat is fun, easy, and can make a lasting difference for wildlife.
Rapid and large-scale changes to our lands and waters mean wildlife are losing the habitats they once knew. Every habitat garden is a step toward replenishing resources for wildlife such as bees, butterflies, birds, and amphibians—both locally and along migratory corridors. By adding pollinator-friendly and monarch-friendly plants when you certify, your garden also counts toward the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge.
Certification Requirements
Certified Wildlife Habitat® applicants are asked to confirm they’ve provided the required number of elements for each of the following:
- Food
- Water
- Cover
- Places to Raise Young
- Sustainable Practices
VORACIOUS READERS!!!
READ ALOUD!!!
No, I'm not talking about the children reading aloud... I'm talking about you mom... Read aloud to your children...
WHY???
There are thousands of reasons why, but I will try to stick with just a few reasons.
- Reading to your children builds their vocabulary!!!
- Children do not retain what they read to themselves when they are learning to read. Instead, they are still just decrypting and deciphering the jumble of letters and words in front of them. When you read to them, they can tell you about the store you read to them.
- It bonds you and your child. They will love the time you spent reading to them, and you will love the time you spent reading to them!!!
- It builds character!!! When you read about heros, you become the hero!!! You even try to imagine how you would deal with the situations at hand.
- It sparks an interest in reading, and help them to grow to be voracious readers!!!
- A quote from the book The Read-Aloud Family by Sarah Mackenzie, "If we tell them enough stories, they will have encountered hard questions and practiced living through so many trials, hardships, and unexpected situations that, God willing, they will have what they need to beomce the heroes of their own stories."
- A quote from C.S. Lewis, " Since it is so liekly that they will meet cruiel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. Otherwise you are making their destiny not brighter but darker."
- A quote from the book The Read-Aloud Family by Sarah Mackenzie, "Story by story, they slowly realize that inside of each of us dwells a hero."
- A quote from the book The Read-Aloud Family by Sarah Mackenzie, "The single most important activity for building knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children."
- A quote from the book The Read-Aloud Family by Sarah Mackenzie, "A child who loves to read does so voraciously . This is an academic gain that can hardly be replicated in any way except by cracking open the spine of a good book and getting lost in it."
